Meet Our Volunteers – Gene Shawaryn
“The knowledge-and-experience transfer business.” That’s how Gene Shawaryn defines SCORE Lancaster’s mentoring services. As one of the non-profit group’s counselors, this sales management expert is a critical part of sharing that knowledge and experience with local entrepreneurs.
For more than three decades, Gene worked in the commercial and retail divisions of an international flooring, ceiling, and cabinet company. He also spent many years mentoring students at Millersville University, where he serves on the Executive Committee of the Millersville Mentoring Alliance Program.
As a SCORE counselor, Gene works with small businesses and start-ups, helping clients identify their market and assess cash flow. The University of Maryland graduate also assists clients with other challenges that stymie new business owners. He says, “Sometimes the first part of any start-up is to come to grips with what you’re not going to do.”
Gene has shared his experience with a broad range of clients, from a daycare center to a local composer. He says, “We communicate knowledge and experience to these folks so they can have better insight, so they can be successful.”
In addition to his roles as a counselor and as SCORE Lancaster’s Vice President of Business Development, Gene owns a private consulting firm.
