Meet Our Volunteers – Tom Burgum

Tom Burgum

Nearly half a century of business experience — that’s what mentor Tom Burgum shares with SCORE Lancaster clients. During his career with a global flooring, ceiling, and cabinet manufacturer, Tom developed expertise in a litany of sales and marketing skills, including management, training and development, and process improvement. 

Even after decades of building business skills, Tom hasn’t stopped learning. He says that working with SCORE clients has taught him the in’s and out’s of small business marketing. “I’ve learned that for small business, cash is king!  And that spending money on marketing, no matter how clever, might not always be the best idea. ‘Guerrilla Marketing’ – how to do things for free or for little money – is key.”

Tom’s more than a SCORE Lancaster mentor; he’s also the group’s Vice President of Marketing, charged with promoting services to potential clients, including start-ups and established businesses. He says, “SCORE is just as important to existing businesses as to start-ups. If you’re running a small business and are facing a major decision, at SCORE you can turn to any of 50 counselors with relevant experience to help with the process. We offer mentoring, business plan reviews, business roundtables, advisory boards and specialized ‘marketing’ workshops to help existing businesses survive and thrive.” 

When he’s not counseling clients or promoting SCORE, Tom is a Corvette enthusiast, who claims his Detroit upbringing made him a “motorhead by default.”
