Meet Our Volunteers: Dawn Mentzer

August 12, 2010

SCORE Lancaster client Dawn Mentzer knows the value of the group’s expertise. Last fall, she enrolled in the non-profit’s Kauffman FastTrac® business feasibility program for prospective entrepreneurs. Using workshop information, tools and SCORE coaches to explore and analyze the prospect of launching an organic food line, Dawn realized the venture wasn’t for her. She did, however, discover two other callings: freelance writer, and SCORE Lancaster Counselor.

Dawn developed her project management and marketing expertise in the telecommunications industry.  Now she counsels an eclectic group of clients, including a bed-and-breakfast, a jewelry designer, and an online eco-friendly clothing boutique. “Some are looking for guidance in working through the steps of starting a business; others are looking for marketing tactics, like how to get their name out to their target market,” she says.

The Millersville University grad recognizes that her dual role as a SCORE client and a counselor is an asset. She says, “I’m going through the same thing [clients] are going through, and I feel like I can really relate to them, and they can relate to me.” For example, Dawn has first-hand experience scrapping a business idea she had felt strongly about. “It’s great to be passionate about a business concept, but you have to stay open-minded and open to change,” she says.

So what did Dawn do after deciding the organic food business wasn’t for her? The discoveries she made in the FastTrac workshops inspired her to launch an enterprise that leverages her skill and passion … and provides the flexible schedule she needs: freelance writing. One of her first clients is SCORE District 303, which includes Lancaster and 15 other SCORE chapters in south central PA and DE … for whom she writes a quarterly newsletter.
